引退宣言後、Def JamのCEOにも就任し、音楽活動はGuestとしてのものに限られていたJay-Zだが、3年ぶりの全面復帰となった。(誰しもが想定していたはずで、何の驚きも無いが。) 高揚感のあるRapの技量もトラックのレベルも高く、Dr. Dreのミックスによって全体的なまとまりも良い。以前との違いは唄が多くなって、ソウルフルになったところか。年相応にリリックがコンシャスな方向に向かっているのも特徴的だ。それにしても自信たっぷりの堂々としたアルバムである。
