Aftermathと契約し、Dr. Dreの後ろ盾を得たKendrick Lamarのメジャーデビューアルバム。USのレビューサイトではかなりの高評価を得ている。また、前作は配信のみだったので、physical releaseとしても初となる。ジャケットにshort film by Kandrick Lamarとあるように、架空の町 m.A.A.d city(出身地Comptonのことらしい)を舞台にKendrick Lamar少年のGhettoでの成長を描いた一種のコンセプトアルバム。そんなわけなので、Skitが多めだったり、Trackの途中で曲調が変わったりと、気が抜けない作品でもある。Trackは前作同様、メローなものや哀愁感のあるものなどまさにWest Sideらしい作りで、そこに緩めのRapがのっかっているのもいつもの通り。
